My showreel for 2009 is made up of mostly my favourite projects or projects that have had a level of importance in my career so far. Nearly all of the content has been solely animated and produced by myself and contains some personal projects as well as corporate work.

I have followed skateboarding for nearly a decade and decided to develop a personal project using a skate company based in Liverpool as a focus. The general idea was to create an advert for the company to put on their website. To now I have only focused on the 3D aspects of the animation and have only fully rendered out one camera view. I plan on working within After Effects and C4D to add motion graphics to complete the advert.

As part of the 2008 Capital of Culture launch event at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, we worked alongside Nigel Jameson (Sydney Olympics opening director) and Jane Casey (Big in Japan). Documenting various stages in the history of Liverpool, I worked to create several animations that were used on a 80ft high projection screen.

I don’t find myself getting much chance to do character animation although it is a pleasure of mine as I enjoy drawing characters in my spare time.

Optimistic Bob was born from a print project initially for an Orange YCN competition brief. It quickly became a character animation project that I developed to be a series of virals. Although this is a few years old, I still enjoy Bob’s mini adventures.

I began this project as a response to a recent E-Sting competition and used it as a chance to develop my 3D skills. I had recently modelled an Osprey Helicopter for a similar personal project, so I decided to merge the two. In the time I was working on this project I came across several challenges that helped me to learn new processes that made the final project achievable.

As part of an on running campaign for Business Link Northwest I developed a character originated from an earlier animation ‘Optimistic Bob’. The character, Mel, takes the viewer thought the stages of ‘Access to Finance’ (a service provided by Business Link Northwest). As part of a longer film this animation is split into section stings.

We were approached with a tender to produce a series of videos that required an animated section to each video. I worked alongside the Director of Production to develop a pitch which won the work. This progressed into a range of stylised openings using map references and business facts.

This project was a fast turn around job for the BBC and John Moores University as an opening presentation piece to promote communications between the BBC and universities in the northwest.

I have been working as a professional designer and animator for nearly 3 years and plan on continuing to work as an animator, designer, illustrator for many years to come. There is nothing I would rather do with my life than draw, design and make things move.

I find that a lot of my hobbies are weighted more towards the arts, such as drawing and painting, however I am crazy about furniture design specifically chairs and desks. Although I don’t get the chance to produce many of my designs I have managed to get several desk designs completed, the most recent being a solid oak desk made from railway sleepers. The original design would of meant a finished product of nearly half a ton, as I lived in a third floor Georgian terrace it quickly got lightened. I try and play sports like football although I used to be an active skater and snowboarder until I tore the cartilage in my knee. I do still get the chance to do it every now and again though. I don’t necessarily see myself as an inventor but I do enjoy creating little things and building things from card, wood and random electrical components.
